Turbidity and Suspended Solids

Expertise in the Treatment of Turbidity

Turbidity is a measurement of relative clarity of water. Material causing turbidity includes anything suspended in the water, such as clay, silt, particles of inorganic and organic matter, algae, soluble colored organic compounds, plankton and other microscopic organisms. Turbidity gives water a cloudy or opaque appearance.

Suspended solids cause turbidity and are small solid particles which remain in suspension in water as either colloids or due to the motion of the water and cause turbidity. Removal of suspended solids is generally achieved through the use of sedimentation and/or filtration. By eliminating suspended solids via turbidity reduction in a water supply, the water is usually rendered close to drinking quality. Treatment is followed by disinfection to ensure the water is pathogen free prior to consumption.

Turbidity and Suspended Solids

Tonka Water’s Large Breadth of Turbidity Solutions

Tonka Water offers pilot testing to optimize an existing plant or to assist in the design of a new plant.

Unitized Treatment System (UTS)

Tonka Water’s packaged systems meet water treatment needs in a customizable manner. Tonka Water has packaged systems for both groundwater and surface water.

Clarification Systems

Tonka Water’s clarification products can accommodate round or square basins and are designed to introduce raw water with recirculated, previously formed floc to maximize chemical efficiency. These basins can include sludge collection mechanisms, recirculation equipment and either peripheral or radial launders depending on basin size.

Specialized Surface Water Components

Tonka Water has a suite of surface water products to meet all of your surface water treatment needs.

  • MechVac™ – Mechanized Sludge Vac System includes four main components including drive system, structural support, sludge removal cart and instrumentation.
  • BLEU™ – Stainless steel underdrain with a dual chambered design.
  • Uni-Pac™ – Inclined parallel plates arrayed in steep rows for uniform upward flow distribution.
  • Simul-Wash™ – Air/water filter backwash system.

Gravity Filtration

Tonka Water has a wide variety of gravity filter applications for surface, groundwater or tertiary filtration. Our vessels can be manufactured in round, square or rectangular configurations and can be made of coated carbon steel, stainless aluminum, concrete or stainless steel.

2 stage process: Buoyant media clarification and filtration in a high-performance, compact footprint.

The equipment incorporates gravity filters, which use multi-media for treatment of surface water applications with high turbidity levels. The staged process also provides adjustable flocculation as well as media clarification and filtration all in a compact, high performance system.
