Nitrates can be found in both surface and groundwater. While low concentrations do not generally cause concern, higher levels can create health problems. High levels of nitrate are naturally occurring or often the result of improper well construction, overuse of chemical fertilizers, animal feedlots, industrial waste, septic systems and food processing waste.
