Groves, Texas, the third largest city in Jefferson County, was looking to expand their water plant and replace their existing system. The new plant was to be built next to the former plant, allowing for easy accessibility and transfer of operations. The city and its engineer selected the Tonka Water RotaClear™ coupled with Simul-Wash™ filtration, to achieve superior operation and seamless responsibility in one complete system. The new plant was commissioned with a rated plant flow of 5.6 MGD.
The treatment process initiates with aeration, retention and clarification. Coagulant, sodium hydroxide (pH control) and polymer are added to assist in flocculation and settling prior to introduction to the RotaClear™. Tonka Water’s RotaClear™ clarifiers were custom fabricated in stainless steel to eliminate long-term maintenance costs, and are the workhorse of the treatment process. RotaClear™ clarifiers use a single drive rotor/pump mechanism that allows for a reactor-clarifier process including primary and secondary mixing zones as well as settled solids recirculation. To promote efficient coagulation, a polymer is sometimes added between the mixing and settling zones of the clarifiers. The clarified effluent then passes through a chlorine contact basin, then into the filters.
The Filtralator™ gravity filters with Simul-Wash™ are designed with additional media expansion capability in the event that a polishing layer of granular activated carbon (GAC) should be necessary in the future. Filter influent is flow-controlled and equally divided into the dual media filters, containing Tonka Water’s Unicast™ filter underdrains. Tonka Water’s high-pressure Unicast™ underdrain is the strongest underdrain in the industry, made by pouring a 6” thick concrete monolithic slab over an open plenum, and is outfitted with Tonka Water’s efficient media-retaining nozzles. Introduction of air scour is accomplished below the underdrain, and each filter also includes Tonka Water’s super-efficient Simul-Wash™ backwash system, saving thousands of gallons of waste washwater per backwash.
Tonka Water’s Simul-Wash™ backwash system has a lower rate of media loss and a reduced level backwash waste compared to similar backwash systems using simultaneous air and water backwash. This cost effective solution will also improve efficiency through longer filter runs.
