Haines City

Location: Haines City, FL

Haines City located in Polk County Florida, was required to meet new compliance standards after regulations regarding disinfection by-product levels were adjusted. Tonka Water, a U.S. Water Brand was selected as the process system manufacturer for the city’s new water treatment plant. With a focus on waste reduction and a small footprint, the Haines City system includes four Organix™ ion exchange vessels with engineered aeration, designed for a flow rate of 3,600 gpm, with a focus on waste reduction and smaller footprint.

To address Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) through a single treatment train, the process begins as water is aerated in-line, then flows into the ion exchange vessel. The purpose of applying oxygen upstream of the ion exchange vessel is to cultivate sulfate reducing biology in the ion exchange bed, therefore reducing hydrogen sulfide. TOC is then removed through the ion exchange process before delivery to distribution and storage.

Biologically enhanced ion exchange using Organix technology was also chosen because it provides incidental hydrogen sulfide removal with minimal additional capital equipment. This innovative treatment process, by virtue of its efficient TOC reduction, greatly decreases the amount of disinfection by-products in the final effluent. With the Organix system, all treatment is achieved through a single process train allowing for cost savings, single pumping, reduced waste and a smaller footprint.

The Haines City plant is performing beyond expectations since its commissioning in 2017. Tonka Water, a U.S. Water Brand is proud to have assisted the community in achieving its treatment goals.
